Do EU Residents Need a Dubai Visa?
The answer depends primarily on the passport you will use to travel—not simply on living in the European Union. Who Is Considered an EU Resident?
For this guide, an EU resident is a person legally living in an EU member state under a valid residence permit, work permit, family permit, student permit or long-term residence status. An EU resident is not necessarily an EU citizen.Indian resident in Germany

EU residence is not the same as Schengen visitor status. A residence permit normally proves legal long-term residence. A short-stay Schengen visa only authorises a temporary visit and may not provide the same UAE eligibility.

Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are European countries but are not EU member states. Their residence documents should not be described as EU residence permits. Applicants living there can still request an eligibility review, but their status must be assessed using the correct national residence document and passport.
EU Passport Holders and Visa on Arrival
Citizens of many EU member states can travel to Dubai or another UAE emirate without arranging a tourist visa before departure. Entry permission is normally issued at immigration, and the permitted duration depends on the traveller’s nationality. EU passport holders should still carry:- A passport valid for at least six months
- A return or onward ticket
- Hotel booking or UAE host details
- Evidence of sufficient funds if requested
- Travel insurance, strongly recommended
Do not assume every European passport receives the same stay. Entry length and conditions can differ by nationality. Check the permission recorded by UAE immigration when you arrive.
Non-EU Citizens Living in Europe: Do You Need a Visa?
If you live legally in Europe but travel on a non-EU passport, your residence card does not automatically provide visa-free entry. Many travellers in this category need a pre-arranged Dubai visa for EU residents before boarding.When should you apply in advance?

Updated UAE Entry Rules for Selected EU Residence-Permit Holders
UAE rules expanded in 2026 allow selected nationalities holding valid residence permits issued by EU member states and other approved countries to use a conditional 14-day or 60-day entry route. This does not mean every EU resident or every Schengen visa holder qualifies. Eligibility depends on all of the following:- Passport nationality: the traveller must hold a passport from an eligible country.
- Residence-permit validity: the EU residence document must be valid and meet the applicable conditions.
- UAE immigration requirements: the traveller must satisfy the current entry rules and document checks.
- Intended stay: the correct 14-day, 60-day or pre-arranged tourist visa route must be selected.
Important: Do not treat this as universal visa-free entry for EU residents. Airlines and UAE immigration may verify both the passport and residence permit before boarding or entry.

Can EU Residents Extend Their UAE Visa?
Extension eligibility depends on the entry permission or visa issued. Some tourist visas can be extended inside the UAE, while certain 60-day entry routes are non-extendable. Never assume an extension is automatic.- Check the exact expiry date shown on the visa or immigration record
- Request extension advice before the authorised stay expires
- Do not overstay while waiting for an extension decision
- Overstay penalties may apply for every unauthorised day
Abu Dhabi and UAE Entry Requirements
A UAE tourist visa is not restricted to Dubai. If your visa permits entry through the relevant UAE port, you can generally arrive through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or another authorised UAE entry point and travel between all seven Emirates during your permitted stay.Carry these documents at immigration
