If your flight connects through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah and you plan to leave the airport during your layover, you’ll need a UAE transit visa. Unlike a tourist visa, a transit visa is designed specifically for short stopovers and comes in two durations depending on how long your connection is. This guide covers eligibility, documents, pricing, and the step-by-step application process for both options.

Who Needs a UAE Transit Visa?

You need a transit visa if all of the following apply:

  • You are flying through a UAE airport (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Sharjah) on your way to a third country
  • You intend to exit the airport during your layover
  • You do not already hold a valid UAE visa, GCC residence permit, or passport from a visa-exempt country

If you are simply staying airside and not clearing immigration, a transit visa is generally not required. Rules vary slightly by airline and nationality, so it’s worth confirming with your carrier before booking.

48-Hour vs. 96-Hour Transit Visa: What’s the Difference?

Documents Required

  • Passport copy (valid for at least 6 months from date of entry)
  • Passport-size photo (white background)
  • Confirmed onward flight ticket showing your connection out of the UAE
  • Full itinerary details (arrival and departure flight numbers and dates)

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Choose your visa duration — select 48-hour or 96-hour based on your layover length.
  2. Submit your documents — upload your passport copy, photo, and flight itinerary online.
  3. Processing — most transit visa applications are processed within 24–48 hours.
  4. Receive your e-visa — your visa is emailed as a PDF; print or save a digital copy for immigration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend a transit visa once I’m in the UAE?
No. Transit visas are not extendable. If you need more time, you would need to apply for a standard tourist visa instead.

Can I convert my transit visa to a tourist visa?
No, a transit visa cannot be converted after issuance. If you anticipate needing a longer stay, apply for a tourist visa from the outset.

Do all nationalities pay the same transit visa fee?
No. While most applicants pay the standard rate, some nationalities are subject to an additional risk-assessed processing tier with different pricing. Our team confirms your exact fee before you pay.

What happens if my layover is shorter than 48 hours?
You should still apply for the 48-hour visa — it’s the minimum duration available, even for shorter layovers.
